The Dutch-born Lavinia Meijer is one of Europe’s most prominent harp ambassadors. A true shooting star, she was awarded the prestigious Dutch music prize in 2009. At OdeGand, she will play music by Scarlatti (Sonata in A), Ibert (Ballade and Scherzetto from “Six Pièces”), Pierné (Impromptu-Caprice), Salzedo (Variations sur un thème dans le style ancien) and Patterson (Late-night Ant-ics and Mosquito Massacre from “Bugs”). |

Graupner 2010 (Belgium / international)
St. Barbarachurch - 3.45pm / 8.30pm
|
|
The year 2010 marks the 250th anniversary of Christoph Graupner’s death (1683~1760), a composer who was a contemporary of Johann Sebastian Bach’s. A conductor and musicologist, Florian Heyerick has been more than instrumental in reviving Graupner’s work. From an impressive body of 1481 church cantatas, he chose “Entrata per la Musica di Tavola” and “Die Krankheit so mich drückt”. Do not miss this one-off opportunity to discover these cruelly underrated gems from a glorious musical past!
Goedele Heidbuchel (soprano), Swantje Hofmann, Caroline Bayet, Kaat de Cock, Bernard Wolteche (Ex Tempore instrumental ensemble), Florian Heyerick (harpsichord and direction).
Many thanks to Graupner 2010, the Royal Conservatory of Ghent, and Muziekcentrum De Bijloke

Trommelvuur (The Netherlands)
Handelsbeurs - 2pm / 5.30pm

(c) Anna Van Kooij |
|
Three friends, six hands, thirty fingers, three doors and a lot more to come. They beat, play rolls, wipe, swish, pound and play brushes. Who is the fastest, and who’s the cleverest? Who dares to remain silent longer than the others? Come prepared for a bonfire of rhythms and restlessly swinging cymbals. Doors that are used as musical instruments, sticks that can actually sing… this is one of those concerts where additional pairs of ears and eyes would be more than welcome!
Twitching Eye Trio: Jasper Goedman, Marijn Korff de Gidts, Achim Heine percussion

Heaven and Hell (Belgium)
Groenzaal - 2pm / 5.30pm
(c) Annick Degreve |
|
In this performance inspired by William Blake’s fascinating work, a classical recital context meets… a heavy metal band.
“Power to imagination” is probably what best describes Blake’s world, and this motto seems to perfectly fit the bill of this truly unique performance!
With Ilse Eerens (soprano), Kristien Ceuppens (oboe), Inge Spinette (piano) and the metal band My Lament. Stage design and direction: Maja Jantar. Music by (amongst others) J. Harvey (Ah! Sunflower for voice and piano), B. Britten (Songs and Proverbs of William Blake, A Sick Rose), Vaughan-Williams (Ten Blake songs for voice and oboe) and songs the band My Lament wrote especially for this production.

Seelenvoll (Belgium)
Cultuurkapel St. Vincentius (chapel) - 2pm / 5.30pm / 8pm
|
|
The famous Adagietto of Gustav Mahler’s Symphony No. 5 abounds with extra-musical instructions, like “Seelenvoll” (soulful). After his “In Tränen unendlicher Lust” project, Wim Lambrecht decided to take them as a starting point for his analysis of the representation of the late-romantic German Lied. Don’t expect a classic Lied recital, for this is a quest for what such an event could be in the 21st century, with the human voice and the audience’s experience at its centre.
Concept and elaboration: Wim Lambrecht / Mezzo-soprano: Ana Naqe / Bass-baritone: Jean Bermes / Pino: Michel Stas
Music: Songs of Gustav Mahler and Alma Schindler-Mahler

Uri Caine (USA)
Vooruit Theaterzaal - 2pm / 5.30pm
|
|
Uri Caine may have become a household name among jazz aficionados, but he is equally famous for his idiosyncratic interpretations of classical music. During OdeGand, he embarks on a fresh exploration of a jazz album he released in 1997, which was devoted to Gustav Mahler. Despite receiving the prize of the German Mahler Society, this release led to passionate discussions with some members of the jury who strongly disliked his performance and arrangements. Well, we thought we’d let you decide. |
